Cultural Events

We hoped to determine the percentage of attendees who are Canadian at events held by the Clinton County Council on the Arts, Crete Memorial Center, and the Hartmann Theater and Hawkins Hall and SUNY Plattsburgh. At the time of the original 1994 study, none of these venues had a means to track attendance. Some don’t charge an admission fee and others only accept American currency. None keep addresses of attendees. Attendance by Canadians was generally considered to be minuscule for one or more of the following reasons:

* performances are held on Thursdays or Sundays, times that are not convenient for Canadians

* most promotions are not targeted at Canada

Since completing the original study, the Clinton County Council on the Arts conducted a marketing study which concluded in part that the potential market expansion should focus on local surrounding areas. Canada was determined not to be a viable market for Clinton County artistic events and the Council has chosen not to focus on attracting a Canadian audience. Until such time as the Clinton County arts community chooses to focus on the Canadian market, there is little point in including this sector in future replications.
