 Overall, the insurance sector in Clinton County reported a 104% increase in business with Canadian-owned firms, International border businesses, and Public border-related agencies from 1996 to 1998. The most significant increase was in business conducted with Canadian-owned businesses located in Clinton County, increasing 167% from 1996 to 1998 and accounting for 83% of all business conducted with Canadian-owned businesses, International border businesses, and Public border-related agencies.

 Thirteen firms that had participated in 1996 also responded in 1998. These 13 firms accounted for 92% of the business reported in 1996 and 90% of the 1998 business. The 13 firms that participated in the 1996 and 1998 studies showed an overall increase in business of 106% from 1996 to 1998. Business conducted with Canadian-owned companies in Clinton County accounted for 91% of all 1998 business reported by these 13 firms.

 Methodological Note:

 Of the 62 insurance firms surveyed in 1998, 9 have gone out of business or are no longer doing business in Clinton County. Overall response rate declined from the 1996 study. Eighteen of the 53 firms (34%) surveyed chose to respond for this replication, whereas twenty-one of the 42 firms (50%) surveyed chose to respond in 1996.

 Recommendation for Replication:

Obtain prior agreement to participate from those insurance agencies which responded to this study for the next replication.  Revise and update the Chamber's list of insurance companies operating within Clinton County.  With each replication of this study, the intent should be to track the responses of firms which have responded previously, thus compiling comparable trend data, while continually expanding the base of total respondents.

The 1994 figure is calculated by applying an average premium for non-commercial real estate of $5.00 per $1,000 of value to the total equalized assessed value of Canadian-owned residential real estate in Clinton County for the calendar year 1994:  $20,191,457.  The 1996 figure is calculated by applying an average premium for non-commercial real estate of $4.60 per $1,000 of value to the total equalized assessed value of Canadian-owned residential real estate in Clinton County for the calendar year 1996:  $22,163,530. The 1998 figure is calculated by applying an average premium for non-commercial real estate of $3.50 per $1,000 of value to the total equalized assessed value of Canadian-owned residential real estate in Clinton County for the year 1998: $20,226,509.
