This data from the U.S. Department of Commerce documents export sales of merchandise by exporters located in zip code 129. This zip code area includes Clinton, Essex and parts of Franklin County, New York but is the most localized data available. It illustrates substantial export growth among companies in the zip code area at a rate well in excess of the national average. It is assumed that exports from this zip code area travel to or through Canada.

From 1994 to 1996, total U.S. exports of goods and services grew by only 21% while export sales of merchandise by exporters located in zip code 129 increased by 160% over the same period. The merchandise exports from exporters located in zip code 129 reflect exports to all parts of the world which are assumed to travel through Canada and/or have a final destination in Canada. Total U.S. commodity exports and total merchandise exports from New York State destined exclusively to Canada increased by 16% and 20%, respectively, from 1994 to 1996. Although $488,588,203 in export merchandise sales reflects a 160% increase since 1994 for exporters located in zip code 129, this amount represents only 5% of total New York State export merchandise sales to Canada in 1996. Thus the large fluctuation in exports from zip code 129 can be seen as consistent with the lesser increase in total New York State exports to Canada.
