Note: Twenty-five out of fifty-eight companies contacted were willing and able to release data on the value of investments in machinery and equipment located in Clinton County for 1994. In 1996, a total of 56 out of 94 companies were willing and able to release this data. Of the original 25 firms to respond in 1994, 20 responded again in 1996 recording a total of $13,192,411 in machinery and equipment investment. For this group of original respondents M&E investment increased 240% from 1994 to 1996. An additional investment of $2,564,615 was made by firms that responded for the first time to the 1996 survey.

Methodological Notes:

Data on the value of investments in machinery and equipment was obtained through phone calls and/or visits made by the Director of the Clinton County Industrial Development Agency, City of Plattsburgh Community Development Director, and the Vice President of the Cross-Border Development Corporation.

Recommendations for Replication:

An effort should be made to query the same firms that were willing and able to respond to the original study and to this replication study. Through tracking the information provided by this select group of respondents, comparable data over time can be developed. In addition, the Chamber should endeavor to expand the base of businesses that are willing and able to respond to this query.
