CHAMBER POINTS TO TOP 3 ACTION ITEMS FOR STATE LEGISLATURE  - -

As the 2015 New York State legislative session approaches its end, the North Country Chamber of Commerce is pointing to three top priorities for action before the session concludes:

·         Enactment of a fully funded capital plan for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority

        (MTA).

·         Enactment of a permanent extension of the Property Tax Cap.

·         Enactment of authorization for an Occupancy Tax in Franklin County in support of        tourism marketing and development there.

"These three actions would provide major support for the North Country economy and would conclude the session on a high note for our region," states Greg MacConnell, Chairman of the North Country Chamber of Commerce.

"These are three very different matters but each is fundamental to economic success and growth in the North Country," notes Garry Douglas, Chamber President. "The MTA capital plan is essential to our region's transportation equipment companies, with anticipated orders already stalled and anything less than a fully funded plan likely to further postpone orders and impact job opportunities."

"In the case of the Property Tax Cap, " states Douglas, "we have something which has finally worked in terms of containing the form of taxation in New York which is not only onerous for homeowners but has become the greatest tax burden on business and jobs. It's due to expire next year and must not only be renewed now but made permanent so homeowners and employers can be confident that these costs will continue to be subject to some limitation."

"As for the occupancy tax for Franklin County, the regional business community has expressed its strong solidarity with businesses and taxpayers in Franklin County who are missing out on the economic benefits of a system for funding tourism marketing and development already enjoyed almost everywhere else," reports Douglas. "Franklin County's economy is disadvantaged without this tool, and the whole North Country economy is weaker to the degree that one of our counties remains weaker. Hopefully, 2015 is the year this can be fixed."

The North Country Chamber of Commerce is the largest business and economic development organization in northern New York, linking more than 4,200 enterprises across Clinton, Franklin, Essex, Hamilton and northern Warren Counties. It serves as an active advocate on behalf of the North Country economy in Albany, Washington and elsewhere.
