The North Country Chamber of Commerce is welcoming the on-time achievement of a 2015-16 New York State Budget and is pointing to the inclusion of several key items supported by the regional business community.
"First and foremost, we welcome the fifth budget in a row which is not only on time, but continues to reflect fiscal discipline with on-going spending increases once again kept within 2% growth," states Garry Douglas, President of the North Country Chamber of Commerce. "We're already starting to take these two things for granted, which only shows how far we have come from the dysfunction and out of control budgetary growth of just five years ago. These two achievements are putting New York on a more sustainable track, and form an important basis for shifting the economy and business climate."
The Chamber is also welcoming and highlighting several specific components of the new budget which it has been advocating for this year in Albany.
"The use of the state's one time settlement windfall of $5 billion for infrastructure and upstate economic development is spot on, including $1.5 billion for upstate revitalization," says Douglas. "This will allow us over the next few years to begin to make unprecedented investments in those economic development strategies which present each upstate region with the greatest opportunities for growth. The North Country is already at work on its expanded plan and strategies and we look forward to the upcoming competition."

"We also welcome several capital investments which we have been advocating, each being directly important to the North Country economy," states Douglas. "These include an historic $500 million investment in broadband aimed at closing all remaining gaps in the North Country and statewide by 2019."

The North Country Chamber of Commerce is the largest business and economic development organization in northern New York, linking more than 4,200 employers across Clinton, Franklin, Essex, Hamilton and northern Warren Counties. It works actively in both Albany and Washington on behalf of North Country business and the North Country economy.
