8/14/2020   - Border Restrictions Extended Again

CHAMBER DISAPPOINTED THAT EXTENSION OF BORDER RESTRICTIONS
INCLUDES NO FRAMEWORK FOR THE FUTURE AND NO OPENING TO INTERIM STEPS

"While another extension of the existing border crossing restrictions was wholly expected," states Garry Douglas, President of the North Country Chamber of Commerce, "we are again disappointed that the U.S. and Canadian governments have yet to develop any decision making framework or plan for eventual reopening, and they continue to show no interest in considering any reasonable interim steps such as an easing for family, an allowance for owners of property near the border, or some expansion of categories of essential business travel, for example. We will continue to press for such steps before September 21 in concert with the Northern Border Caucus in Congress and with friends on both sides of the border."

The Chamber notes that there continue to be no restrictions on north-south commercial movements. "This is crucial for our region as it has maintained cross border supply chains," notes Douglas, "but business is being increasingly stymied in other ways as our bi-national manufacturers cannot have their key people travel as freely back and forth, and we cannot do things like site visits which is stalling economic development opportunities."
