Chamber Optimistic about combining Alstom and Bombardier
The North Country Chamber of Commerce is expressing optimism about the future of rail car production in the region, following the announcement that terms have been agreed to for the acquisition of Bombardier's global rail division by Alstom, a French based rail car and locomotive manufacturer.
"The resulting combination of these two companies has the promise of creating a new whole business which is even stronger than the sum of the parts," states Garry Douglas, Chamber President. "In North America and elsewhere, there has been a need for consolidation to create a larger and stronger competitor in the marketplace to face the growing presence of newer players. This combination should be able to compete even more effectively for more contracts in the future, keeping the already very busy operation in Plattsburgh even busier in the years to come."
Douglas notes that Alstom, "has stressed the value of Bombardier's operations in the U.S. and Canada, with the Plattsburgh plant standing as an especially integrated one with globally respected expertise in a number of components, as well as great supply chains and a talented workforce."
The North Country Chamber has remained in communication with Bombardier leaders and now looks forward to connecting with Alstom leadership in the coming months, with the transition estimated to take up to a year. In the meantime, we will continue to work actively in support of upcoming opportunities for Bombardier, with pending plans to host additional visits in the weeks ahead by key state and federal officials.
