12/20/2019   - House Approves USMCA

Chamber Applauds the House Approval of USMCA

The North Country Chamber of Commerce is applauding the approval of the USMCA agreement by the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 385 to 41.

"This agreement brings certainty and predictability to the U.S.-Canadian economic partnership, as well as a number of enhancements in areas such as agriculture," states Garry Douglas, President of the North Country Chamber of Commerce. "And given that there is no more powerful dynamic in the North Country economy than our deep and growing connections of all kinds with our northern neighbors, this action is highly positive news for the region, both presently and for decades to come."

The North Country Chamber estimates that the annual direct economic impact of cross border commerce in all of its forms exceeds $2 billion for Clinton County alone, with an estimate that 15% of the Clinton County workforce is employed by a Canadian or border related employer on this side of the border.

"We are setting records for employment and are drawing international attention for our success in attracting foreign direct investment," Douglas notes. "With this positive action on USMCA, we can expect further cross border investment and partnership in the years ahead. We thank the House for its approval, and thank Congresswoman Elise Stefanik and her bi-partisan colleagues in the Northern Border Caucus which she co-chairs for championing the cause. We now look forward to expected favorable action in the Senate early in the new year. Onward and upward for U.S.-Canadian economic partnership!"
